Several hundred of annotated pages later: Your Honor, I love them. I’d give them all my minutes. I’d die for them.
THIS IS MY FAVORITE BOOK FROM B.K. BORISON AND YOU CANNOT TELL ME OTHERWISE!! Grim Tidings was so incredibly written and I felt SO many emotions while reading and cried many, many times. It has been a long time since I read a book where I was so emotionally connected with the main character and really felt my heart ache for Darcy: a reaper who’s tired of death. She didn’t choose this position and constantly questions her purpose in this role. You feel her pain, her anguish, her lost hope. You feel it all as a reader then you throw in a gorgeous Guardian with his own loneliness and let me tell you, I barely got through the first few chapters before crying. In fact, I cried throughout this book!
Darcy and Gabriel are perfectly imperfect characters with so much chemistry, banter, push/pull tension. The grumpy x grumpy trope really works for them because from the very first interaction, you can TELL you were going to be in for a ride and love/hate every single second of it. Their relationship goes through so many selfless acts, sacrificing moments, and a beautifully done “let me take care of you” trope. I mean, this book takes “let me carry your burdens” to a WHOLE NEW LEVEL. I love Darcy and Gabriel so much. Truly. I would go to war for them.
However, I would like to ask a small question: what’s with this series and the men being so unnecessarily cruel to our girls?! I know you’re mortal enemies and you have your own prejudice about reapers but taking HER insecurities to throw back in her face INTENTIONALLY!!?!? That is NOT OKAYYY. If I see another “landing exactly as I intended” followed by immediate regret in future books, I’m going to respectfully crash out. Gabriel is LUCKY that he checked himself so fast and was nothing but GOOD TO DARCY for the rest of the book because I would personally throw hands at him on her behalf. The number of times I had to write “alright Gabriel…you get SOME points back” because he made her genuinely smile and constantly fought to be together with her…you’re forgiven.
All this to say, and I want to reiterate: I do really love this book. This is a six star read for me. I love our main couple, I love our side characters (the warmest hugs to Frank and goodest of pats Tater Tot), I love the premise that brings everyone together. I loved journeying with Darcy and Gabriel to their happily ever after. Also, reading the author acknowledgements was so insightful and really brought the entire book into a different light. It made me look at death differently, both in life and in reflection of this story. So please, give Grim Tiding if it’s not already on your TBR. Every page is worth it and I will be thinking about Darcy and Gabriel for the rest of my days.
Ps. This is book two in the Ghosted series by B.K. Borison. Although it’s a series, each book can be read as a stand alone story and it’s not necessary to read the previous book to enjoy this one. However, I reco checking out Good Spirits whenever you get the chance!
